* “I would like to acknowledge that we are gathered on the unceded territory of ...”
This is inappropriate – We Canadians are not squatters, bent on praising the generosity of the lords on whose land we allegedly squat.
* “Canadians fought and died alongside our allies.”
Yes, we did, in the hope of making each of those wars the last war ever. We are sad the wars happened and lament the lives lost, including those of the “enemies”.
* “Multiculturalism” is ill defined to us, and this precludes having endorsed it.
* “Today, Canada faces another critical moment. Democracy, pluralism, the rule of law, self-determination, and freedom are values which Canadians hold dear, and ones which the Government is determined to protect.”
Would it not have been better to eradicate the perils, than to “protect” the freedoms of the currently vulnerable?
* “The system of open global trade that, while not perfect, has helped to deliver prosperity for Canadians for decades.”
No, Your Majesty, this is not so! Simply said, they lied to you on that!
* “We must be clear-eyed: the world is a more dangerous and uncertain place than at any point since the Second World War”.
It would have been helpful all around if you had told us how the world got worse. For Canada cannot wash, Pontius Pilate fashion, her hands of that ... If “elections” were not “bought and sold”, we could have prevented this ...
* “Many Canadians are feeling anxious and worried about the drastically changing world around them. Fundamental change is always unsettling. Yet this moment is also an incredible opportunity. An opportunity for renewal.
An opportunity to think big and to act bigger. An opportunity for Canada to embark on the largest transformation of its economy since the Second World War. A confident Canada, which has welcomed new Canadians, including from some of the most tragic global conflict zones, can seize this opportunity by recognising that all Canadians can give themselves far more than any foreign power on any continent can ever take away. And that by staying true to Canadian values, Canada can build new alliances and a new economy that serves all Canadians.”
Yes Sir, Bravo Your Majesty, shout I.
* “The Prime Minister and the President of the United States, for example, have begun defining a new economic and security relationship between Canada and the U.S., rooted in mutual respect and founded on common interests, to deliver transformational benefits for both sovereign nations.”
The last time this happened (Mulroney and Reagan) it proved disastrous. Time now to salvage what we can from that mistake. Thanks for coming to assist us recover from that Mulroney gaffe ...
* “To be truly strong, Canada must be secure.”
I love it. This is in a class with the old CBC bit “We must remain flexible lest we become rigid”.
* “The Government will protect Canada’s sovereignty by rebuilding, rearming, and reinvesting in the Canadian Armed Forces”.
But how do we fight back Donald Trump who may borrow from Elon Musk and Taylor Swift and buy more submarines than us?
* “The French language and the Quebec culture are at the heart of the Canadian identity. Canada is a country that respects and celebrates its official languages and Indigenous languages. The Government is determined to protect the institutions that bring these cultures and this identity to the world, like CBC/Radio-Canada. It will protect the people who give us access to fresh, healthy, and quality food: agricultural producers. And it will protect supply management”
This bundles the Quebec issue, the dairy subsidies and the ‘more than 70 distinct Indigenous languages’. Given our experience with mild Bilingualism, try to imagine having to learn 70 more languages lest you offend someone by erring while conversing in their language?
* “The Government will always protect the rights and freedoms that the Charter guarantees for every Canadian”.
The Constitution to which the Charter is a part, exists to protect the people from the government. Then, it makes no sense for your Majesty to instruct the Government to protect the Constitution, be it from us or from the Government. Yes?
* “The Government will be a reliable partner to Indigenous Peoples, upholding its fundamental commitment to advancing reconciliation.”
Pending, ongoing, unending “reconciliation” is “crap” in slang.
A “reliable partner”? Other than it would be for all citizens? When is the reconciliation to end what is the schedule for its completion?
* “As Canada moves forward with nation-building projects, the Government will always be firmly guided by the principle of free, prior, and informed consent.”
Please Your Majesty, identify who is to “consent” to governance, if other than the People? If it is the People who are ment to “consent”, why not simply say “will make our governance system “democratia”?
